So you may have read the title to this post and thought “what the shit?”
17 years ago I was a DJ on a community radio station with a pal of mine. We played Nirvana, Offspring, Chilli Peppers, Cyprus Hill, Pearl Jam, Greenday, Metallica, Guns N Roses, Silverchair, Grinspoon, soundgarden, Faith No More and a whoooole bunch of other cool tunes. Plus we yapped and yapped about funny crap we’d done, heard or seen. It was lots of fun but what made it more fun was when people would call in. Friends and family did of course, thanks Mum, but also lots of randoms did too. Some even became regular callers.
We pretended we wanted to share our music but really, deep down, we just wanted and loved the attention.
In a world where we all want a little attention it’s no wonder that I have settled into the Blogosphere quite well haha. I had MySpace and Facebook and they were fun for a while until I got kicked of for being “too honest and opinionated” Sheesh! I didn’t know there was such a thing. Again, I just wanted attention.
Even going all the way back to my school years it was the same thing. I was the class clown, mischevious and just nuts haha. One day the teacher came into the room to find me hanging from the rafters. A couple of months later I put a metal compass in a power point and switched it on. See… nuts. Hey, it made people laugh and happy so therefore I was happy.
Ive been in a few bands and one of which I was the front man. Loved the spotlight… eventually. I was a bit shy at first.
So here I am, almost, two years into my blog and I wanted to share something.
I didn’t start this blog for attention at all. I just started it to share my passion for little plastic soldiers and to find other like minded people. I didn’t expect to find so many cool and interesting people though. I didn’t expect followers or people to comment at all. I didn’t expect to be selected/asked to be a part of a universal project and to go overseas and play a game with fellow bloggers (i.e The Chapel).
I was just Re-reading comments from posts this year and I’m feeling the love people. It’s very, very humbling. I feel we have created a lovely little community within a community here and it’s really very cool. I like that it stretches across the globe and makes us all feel a bit closer.
I must be getting old feeling so sentimental over this dorky little hobby haha. I guess what I’m trying to say is “Thanks”. It’s really cool getting to know you all through your own unique posts and comments.
*cough…
Ok ok ok

A cheeky related joke for you:
So, I had to give up on Facebook and MySpace… I kept getting the two mixed up and asking people to come on MyFace

I love your little off-topic, personal posts; They always manage to put a smile on my face.
I can’t add much more (you’ve summed it all up very well) but I will say that I can’t wait to meet you and everyone else involved with this project. It’s great that this hobby has pulled us all together.
That radio station really sounds like my cup of tea!

Loving the sound of that radio show mate – you fancy moving a little closer to where I live and starting it up again, the airwaves round here are sadly lacking! Totally agree with what you’re saying about community, ultimately this hobby has the potential to be very isolating (i.e. one could just sit in one’s house and paint little models and not speak to people), especially for those – like myself – who’s friends are generally not that interested (most of my mates who’re into this kind of thing live hundreds of miles away so we’re not going to just pop round for a game anyway). Of course you can do great things in isolation but without sharing them more widely you’re really only talking to yourself. By sharing ideas and mixing/matching other people’s concepts with our own we’re all able to tap into an ever deeper well of creativity and inspiration. We really are living in the golden age of the hobby!
Anyway, looking forward to meeting in the autumn – in the meantime, keep up the good work! 🙂

Thanks Wudu. I really enjoyed the radio gig. I got to play some great songs and have a great laugh. I was always in trouble with management for being risqué but I would just play rage against the machine as a way of say F U to the man haha. My mates are all close by but they really just humour me by playing the game. Which is rare. Can’t wait to meet you mate. You’re a hobby hero of mine.

Hehe – don’t put me so high on that pedestal mate, it’s breezy up here! 😉 (Based on my own – very limited – experience of radio, if you’re not in trouble with the management you’re probably doing something wrong!)

I started my blog as a way of recording my painting progress over the years. It has grown into so much more by connecting with other blogs such as yours – it’s a great community to be a part of!
