Army Of HATE – First Miniature

I’ve been feeling a little disconnected from the hobby and my fellow bloggers lately and I think it’s down to a few things.

1. The holiday I had. Being away from it all was kinda good but I did miss my hobby. It was like leaving a child behind haha.

2. Lost my glasses on the holiday so even when I was back I had to wait until my new glasses arrived.

3. I’ve been consumed by the new podcast project with my mate lately.

So what better way to reconnect than to pour myself a lovely scotch and get the paint brushes out aye?

I fell in love with Chaos Blood Reavers from Games Workshop a few years ago when they first came out. Really cool and savage looking and, in my opinion, very underrated. If you like Conan the barbarian, He-Man and pretty much any kind of scary barbarian-esque type stuff these should be your cup of tea.

Apparently they’re not very effective on the battlefield but, meh, I make my own rules anyway and the aesthetic appeal grabbed me straight away.

I started a project, back then, that I called The Blood Reapers (not reavers, that sounded too much like a cult dedicated to the worship of Keanu Reeves haha) that I haven’t really spoken about much on here.

The army is heavily based on the Blood Reavers but also includes other chaos units from GW like knights, marauders and also a few monsters. All have been built and base coated but that’s it.

Then, a little while ago, I discovered a board game and, more specifically, the MINIATURES for a game called HATE. Based off a series of graphic novels by Adrian Smith (similar style to Frank Miller’s style who did 300 and Sin City) the story tells of barbaric, cannibalistic and vicious tribes at war with one another in a world that has gone to shit. Needless to say, I had to have iiiiiiiiiit!

Adrian Smith has also done a lot of the art for Games Workshop over the years.

The trailer for the game is brilliant but, some say, a little controversial due to the level of coarse language and extreme violence. I say it’s a game for young adults and older so if it offends you go back to Snakes and Ladders and Operation… I love those games by the way. Buck-a-Roo was another great kids game and also KerPlunk haha. Brilliant.

The minis fit the overall look and vibe of my Blood Reapers army perfectly and so freaking menacing!!! So with a new injection of inspiration to get the army done, started at least, I began thinking about colour scheme. Right from the start I knew I wanted deathly pale skinned warriors and good portions of blood spattering but being so inspired by the graphic novels of HATE, of which I have the two current volumes, I decided to paint them in a “graphic novel scheme”. Basically in black, grey and white with splashes of realistic blood.

I did some research online and was not at all surprised to see that I wasn’t the first hobbyist to have this idea. I learnt that the style/effect is called chairoscuro, Italian for Light-Dark, which originated from the Renaissance period.

After some reading, pondering, procrastinating, (probably all done on the lavatory) and THEN the consumption of a couple of glasses of scotch I decided to jump in the deep end and just make a start.

I just want to say that these miniatures are, without a doubt, the best quality miniatures I’ve ever seen and painted. The details are crisp and just stunning. There were next to no mould lines or flash. The size and weight is impressive and the over all design and stance of these man-toys are absolutely awesome. Hard not to compare but in my opinion they’re better than GW miniatures in every way. Which is huge for me as GW minis are my favourite.

Even though the comic book look I was going for is a relatively simple idea the palette wasn’t so simple. Basically I used black and white and three or four grey tones in between. I also used a good dose of nuln oil wash and blood for the blood god from GW.

I found the painting to be fun but challenging to find the right greys for the right details. I was going to use some metal paint to edge the metal armour and weapon but in the end I think you can tell what’s what anyway.

First I’d like to show you some of the incredible and bone chilling artwork from The Chronicles of Hate. Not an overly wordy graphic novel but awesome all the same. I highly recommend it to those of you who are into books and/or comics/graphic novels.

Awesome stuff huh?

Now, without further ado, here is the first mini in grayscale with splashes of blood. Note the background.

I’m so happy with how they’ve turned out.

Just to show off the enormity of these brutes here’s what one of them looks like standing next to a very nervous standard imperial guardsman.

Even though the HATE Miniature is standing on a slightly raised base you can still tell he towers over the puny human haha.

I really, really, REALLY enjoyed painting this amazing miniature and look forward to painting all the others. Especially the ones that are as big and even bigger than this bad boy.

The rest of the, massive, Blood Reaper Army will not be in just black and white. The white skin will remain though and there will be blood… oh yes there will be blood. Even though I enjoyed the basic colour scheme/concept I actually did miss using a wider variety of colours.

I hope you like what I’ve done.

Remember, Grace Jones in Conan The Barbarian (or was it the destroyer). She was savage!

Cheers

IRO

  1. That is awesome!!! easily one of the best mini’ paintjobs you’ve ever done, this has got you’re style written all over it. I love Conan and you know I love He-man so I’m looking forward to this all immensely!!

Oh and yes Grace Jones is a total nutcase!!! (it was Destroyer by the way, and I believe she put a couple of stuntmen in hospital in that movie).

    Cheers Roger.

    1. I’m sure she’d eat most stuntmen alive hehe.

Thanks mate I’m glad you like him. The style/concept went better than I expected actually. I’m really looking forward to painting the rest. There’s quite a few of the large scale minis and a ton of the smaller scale ones. Cheers mate

      1. Can I just add here that I’m “liking” your comment because I’m assuming you’re being sarcastic and there is not a single element of truth in it! Hopefully that way, if a SWAT team feels the need to surround your house, they won’t do the same with mine!

  2. You’ve done an outstanding job there, he looks extremely mean! I missed out on HATE, I love Adrian Smith’s artwork and the models look absolutely gorgeous, but I have an aversion to CMON so I ended up sitting on the fence swithering until the ship sailed. Never mind though, now I get to enjoy it by proxy seeing you paint them 😀

Big fan of those Khorne Bloodreavers too as you know so I’m looking forward to seeing what you do with them as well.

    1. Mine came from eBay. Why don’t you like CMON? I don’t know much about them really. I sort of stumbled across Hate. I wouldn’t usually do this but I implore you to get the game or minis mate. You’ll be very impressed. No realroom for conversions but I doubt if you’d want to change anything anyway. They’re stunning sculpts. I’d love to see your paint style on them. Thanks mate.

      1. Mate, you’re leading me down a dark path I tell you! Now I’m trawling round ebay being tempted by things when I should be saving my hard earned pennies for other projects 😉

As for CMON, the community on there back in the old days and the culture of being encouraged to slag off other people’s work I thought was pretty unpleasant, and when they started to take off as a company (rather than just hot-or-not for miniatures) I found a lot of their business practices to be a bit iffy. Mind you, they may be a very different company now for all I know, I haven’t looked in a long time, so I probably shouldn’t be knocking them without knowing more; in the end I drooled over the models, hovered over the “buy” button but never quite went through with it. Now I’m doing the same thing on ebay dammit! 😀

The Hate tribes do remind me somewhat of the Drune Kelts from Confrontation (although, dare I say it, even sexier) – and I’ve been getting the itch to dig mine out and paint them lately so perhaps I’ll restrain myself and work on some of them instead. They have been waiting for paint for a decade after all!

I’m really looking forward to seeing what else you do with them. You’ve done a great job on the tyrant – what other stuff did you get?

      2. Do it!!! You know you will haha. There are two scales. Lots of 28mm true scale which are very cool and quite a few of the big arse scale tribe leaders. These are the best. Check out one called The Twins which is in an expansion pack called Mother. I’ve got this one coming to me in a little while. Maybe just choose a couple first and if you love them as much as I do try and find the whole set or box. Honestly, even the box and packaging is impressive. Yeah I don’t know much about CMON I thought they were just a raging/critique website and then boom I found Hate on there haha. I guarantee you’ll like the minis as much as me.

      3. Yeah, much as it pains me to say it, the Hate stuff is nicer than the Drunes. The Drunes were one of the most amazing things I’d ever seen back in the day but it was over a decade ago, things have moved forward, and they are a very fiddly and slender. I’m still hovering over the buy button dammit!

      4. Press it! Preeessssssss iiiiiiiiiiiiit.

Just think of this, yes it’s costly and yes you don’t neeeeeeed it but one day you’ll be dead and the money won’t matter so why not enjoy yourself?! Haha. I should be a car salesman haha. Do it. You know you’re going to. Just get one to see if you love it. Make sure it’s a bigger scale one though. The 28mm ones are cool but nowhere near as impressive as the big boys.

  3. I got this game, HATE, specially to bolster my Khorne forces. 😂 I love the bloodreavers as well, and thought these would add even more variety. Really dig your paint style for these. I’ll have to think about a similar way without outright stealing your idea!

    1. Haha go ahead and steal the idea man. I’m not the first to do this style either. They’re amazing minis aren’t they. I love how much detail they have. Have you got all the he expansions as well? I’ve got The Mother on the way. 🤘🏼

      Liked by 2 people

      1. I only got The Mother expansion and the Tree tribe – I thought the tree people would be some good variety for Sylvaneth and I originally got The Mother just because it was cool – but now I’m thinking the twins would be a good leader for a Beastclaw Raider force. The minis are great, aside from the fact that there really aren’t a lot of different poses. They look a little smaller than Sigmar stuff too, but once you rebase them, it’s more clear they are actually the same size, so that was a nice surprise!

  4. Looks bloody big mate! must have taken some time to paint one that size ,you’ll have to kiss the Tiny home goodbye if you are going to keep paint fig.s as big as him ,great effect though ,was the size inspired by those big Hawaiians ,HaHa !

  5. It took me a while to realise that your painted figure wasn’t another piece of the artwork! What am I saying – it is artwork! Superb stuff and one of your best so I can see why you are so inspired by this project.

    1. I hoped you would. 😊 Hey have you had a chance to listen to our new podcast yet? Totally cool if you haven’t but I value your opinion as you got me onto Last podcast on the left which inspired me to start a podcast with my mate hehe

      1. I’m listening to about 10-15 minutes at a time while I get ready for work since I don’t have podbean on my phone. You both are easily distracted lol. Fly on the Wall was a perfect title. There seems to be some type of static clicking going on with the sound. Not sure if it’s what you recorded it on or the website though.

      2. Haha very easily distracted. Yeah not sure what that weird clicking was? We couldn’t hear it while recording so we’re thinking it might be radio static. We are on to it though. I believe it’s on Anchor, Apple and Spotify now too if that helps.

  6. Looks great – the lighting obviously helps a great deal to make the photos even more stark. I also got the HATE box for the models (game looks like piss to me), though I’ll disagree on who that trailer was made for – I don’t think it’s for young adults and older – more for 13-16-year-old boys who want to be “edgy” and potentially offend their grandmothers. I found it stupidly hilarious in the level of tryhard.
More importantly, though – agreed on the awesome Not-Chaos Marauder figures. 😉

    1. Hey hey thanks for the comment man. I think it’s been a while since you’ve visited. Always nice to see you pop up on my notifications. I don’t usuallyover do it with light and contrast but it worked really well for the look I was going for.

      1. Yeah, I’ve barely done anything for about a month now, so doing a little catch up. It’s certainly effective for the look you’re going for!

  7. I thought that chiaroscuro was a Mexican dish! Love your work here, and the photos are stunning. Of course it helps that the mini is as well. Good luck with the new project, glad to see you branching out from GW!

    1. Haha well it certainly sounds yummy haha. Thanks Mark. I’m glad you like what I’ve done. Just posted the second mini. I hope you’re well man. I’m actually hoping to start painting the minis you gave me this weekend. I’m working all day Saturday so hopefully Sunday is a day of rest and painting hehe. 👍🏼

      1. All work and no play makes for no fun indeed. I am catching up on blogs I follow and April was more of a gaming month than a painting month. I probably bit off more than I should have in April and I will try to complete May with success – currently I have 22 tanks in progress, and I just got more in prep for D-Day’s 75th anniversary. SO I’m well…BUT…felling behind and I am attending a gaming convention in Maine (HUZZAH) in a couple weeks. So the pressure is on, self-imposed of course. Glad you are back in the saddle and truly, your photos themselves are art. Just love the contrasts you make. I would be disingenuous if I was not to say I’m looking forward to your take on the Macron and the Mark 1 – but the anticipation is fun in and of itself. Now I just have about 17 more blogs to read!! Cheers buddy.

  8. AMAZING work!! Glad you found something to get your creative spark going again! 😀
I love the color scheme you went with (and learning the reasoning behind it!)
Very cool. The comic art is fantastic, too, btw. I’m really looking forward to seeing more of this project!
