It’s been a roller coaster of a week so I haven’t had a whole heap of time but I feel good to of gotten some extra little things done this evening. The next week is going to be hectic too but I’ll try my best to keep chipping away.
After much flip flopping I decided to add interior lights. I figured I’d done wallpaper and curtains so lights would be cool too. While I was at it I thought I may as well build and add furniture as well haha. My to do list is getting longer and longer.
First of all I made a wood heater out of some gauntlets from an Age Of Sigmar statue/terrain kit. I carved in a grill into the gauntlets then glued an old scalpel handle to the top of the wood heater to act as a flue and chimney. I kind of think it looks good just gold like a salvaged stainless steel or aluminium pipe from a demolished building. I was going to use a plastic straw for the chimney but McDonalds have gone green and only have paper straws now haha. A good thing though. Here’s the wood heater painted and insitu. It’s not amazing I guess but looks ok. Then I made some very basic furniture from balsa wood. Simple but effective I think. Next it was time to start attaching the lights. I’ve never done anything electrical for a model or diorama so it was something a bit different for me. Went for just simple lights wrapped around the interior roof of the treehouse but also poked some into the dormer window too. I secured the switch under the decking and will disguise it with a bulkhead.
Now bear in mind that I haven’t done the roof shingles yet so light is pouring out of the roof haha.
Let there be light…
Cosy huh? Not the greatest photos but you get the idea.
Let’s look at the interior with the lights on.
Next I’ll be cutting up lots of cardboard to use as shingles for the roof. Then, for now, I’ll be leaving the treehouse to work on the base. After that I’ll be painting a vehicle, the characters (my three daughters, myself and the wife) and even some animals. Lots to do but I’m still confident I’ll get it all done by the end of Feb.
Good man, they’ve got a couple of chairs now! I’ve been worrying all week about them having to stand the whole time. You mention populating the scene with miniatures for your daughters, your wife and yourself but what about all the rest of us who want to come and live in this tree house as well? Perhaps a queue of us waiting for access? Or will we be the zombies? 😉
Haha noooooo!!! You can take refuge with us. While the rest of the world fights zombies we can do the important stuff like glueing tiny heads onto tiny plastic people.
Very nice indeed. Love the additions and despite the roof not being on yet, it really looks cosy in a rustic kind of way with the lights on. I especially like the wood oven. Simple, but looks believable for a post-apoc setting. Who knew Stormcasts are so versatile.
Nice touch with the curtains! If you’re gonna live in a treehouse to escape the ravening hordes of undead, there’s nothing saying you can’t spruce the place up a bit. Great work, IRO. Watching this build with interest!
Cheers Mr Angry. I don’t think the curtains would offer much in the way of protection but I’m sure my daughters wouldn’t want bars or steel plates for windows hehe. Glad you’re enjoying it mate.
My first thought in looking at the battery holder/switch was that it kind of looked like an oil dum or water tank. I’d possibly paint it as such, rather than hiding it behind a bulkhead. Alternatively, add some straps and paint it up as an underfloor generator, so old steel, possibly with some oxidisation from the weather. Looking good so far.
Amazing work, IRO. I love to see you go all-out, and obviously Alex’s Challenge works well with your love fo the girls to get you motivated in a special way each year. 😀
Ah! That’s cool that McDonalds has stopped using plastic straws. I haven’t been there in a while so I wonder if the ones here have done the same thing. I know my favorite coffee chain here is doing paper straws now too. I use the metal ones at home. Hopefully more and more places will jump on the bandwagon with that. 🙂
This tree house is looking SO GOOD! 😀 I love that you’re going to make little minis of your family and some little critters for it. I can’t wait to see how it all turns out.
It makes me laugh because so many people are complaining about the paper straws but I’m like who cares as long as it’s a step in the right direction. Thanks, glad you like it.
Excellent work IRO and seeing this develop is fun to see. I agree with the suggestion made to disguise the battery holder. If you do lights again then you might want to bare in mind you can get much smaller switches and use lithium batteries all of which are much easier to hide pending what you are doing. Love the furniture and that you are really immersing yourself into the detail. For me that really is the fun bit. That and getting creative trying o figure out how to make something from little bits of crap into something splendid. 🤗
Thanks mate. I enjoyed doing the lights but yeah will definitely do more research next time. I think I was just too eager hehe. Often my problem. I actually think the extra detailing is becoming my favourite aspect to this project and also the ways it’s all evolving quite naturally. Your diabolical Monday’s were definitely the inspiration to the WIP posts.
Given your creative side I never doubted you would love this side of the hobby. You have opened yourself up even more to greater creativity and an increased skills base. You will never look at objects the same way again without wondering what potential something has for being in a diorama! 🙂
Funny you say that because I was just looking at the dog and started wondering if I could shave him and use his fur as some kind of thatched/straw roof haha. Thanks mate
Ahahaha whaaaaaat? That’s the funniest thing I’ve heard today. So haha does that mean he’s trimming the whiskers for his own personal use? Or are they naturally falling off? Hahaha. I can’t stop laughing
That extra work on those lights really paid off. The pictures with the lights on are really atmospheric! Looking forward to seeing the roof and figures added into the mix. This might be the best project you’ve tackled since I started following your work which is a real compliment considered some of the ambitious projects you’ve finished recently 🙂
Very cosy looking, great touch with the heater. I do like the lights not something I’ve ever attempted myself, so good for you to try something new!
Cheers Roger.

Something tells me you’re already a bit zombie-ish, so yeah I’d be taking shots at you from afar.

Haha still plenty of space for them. None of them were ever going to be in the house. Thanks mate.

That’s a great idea Carrion. I will do the old generator look. Thanks very much. I just didn’t want it looking like a giant switch haha.

Very nice solution with the lights. I’d second the oil drum/water tank suggestion by @Carrion Crow.
Can’t wait to see the inhabitants.

Thanks so much! The lights were fiddly but I had fun with them. This is, by far, the most ambitious project I’ve done to date hehe.
