CoffinWood part 7 – The start of a very cool bank

G’day gang,

Well, I finally got a chance to sit down and do some actual hobby stuff.

The other day I showed you some new 3D printed buildings I acquired for my Wild West (CoffinWood) project and one of those items was the bank from the movie Kelly’s Heroes.

Here’s a little reminder of just how cool this piece of terrain is.

Even though I SHOULD have been finishing off the mdf buildings I couldn’t help myself and made a start on this bad boy.

Firstly, I tried looking for a good reference picture of the bank from the movie but couldn’t find anything really. However my search lead me to this article and my mind was blown. I had no idea the movie was based on actual events.

So after having a good read I got back to looking at old bombed out buildings from World War Two. I decided to settle on a murky, beige, dusty sort of look as I figured that would suit my Wild West theme. Funny, I’ve always felt Kelly’s Heroes is a bit like a Wild West movie. Not just because it stars the man with no name, Clint Eastwood. Or because Donald Sutherland has a holstered pistol on his hip. I dunno I guess it just has the vibe of a western. Stealing gold etc.

Anyway, I tackled a good half of the building starting with the first floor and a section of the roof.

Yes you can see the print lines but only because the photos were taken fairly close up. I think overall the 3D prints are cool and will really look the part once set up on the gaming table.

It felt really nice to be back to painting. I listened to some “Wild Fuzz Trip” and drank some wine and really enjoyed myself. Isn’t it amazing how cathartic painting minis can be.

For those who might be interested, Wild Fuzz Trip are an awesome stoner rock instrumental band. Think Tubular Bells but with a lot more distorted bass 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼

  2. Cool building IRO and crying out for a Kelly’s Heroes diorama any time you want to do it again. Perfect for Coffin Wood too and will fit very well with the other buildings you have. More importantly the building got you excited and up and running again. 🙂

Great work so far Luke, nice weathering to the plaster. the lines don’t notice too much with the style of building, You could always add TIM’s chinchilla dust technique for more texture if you wanted, or even stipple on some watered down wall filler (make sure it’s an old brush, as this process will kill it !)

  8. The building looks great- had my 3d printer churning out buildings recently. Should post them up soon.

    Will check out that band they sound like my sort of thing- you into Skullflower, Ramleh, Earthless, Sunn O))) too? They are my favourite noise rock bands.

  9. Very cool, mate! Lots of films have a western vibe, I watched one recently Bounty Killer (and use it as one of my entries for “Forgotten Heroes”) and that is very much a “post apoc” western.

  10. Now that is a cool looking building! It seems Spanish-influenced in its design and I could definitely see it being in Arizona, New Mexico, or even Mexico itself. Its great to see you making some progress on CoffinWood again. Its such a cool project!

  11. Looking great mate, ace building! I’ll tell you now mate you wont find any Chinchillas in Auss even though there is a town in QLD with that name!! there illegal rodents! I have used chalk dust and also the dust from our cat litter stuff! no mate before she used it!!

  13. Yeah – love it! The brickwork showing through works really well. The print lines you refer to I assumed was like textured rendering on the plaster covering the bricks, so no problem there so far as I can see.
