Ork Invasion Part 30 – New OrkLeans so far

John Ruskin (8 February 1819 – 20 January 1900) English writer, philosopher, art critic and polymath of the Victorian Era once said…

“We require from buildings two kinds of goodness: first, the doing their practical duty well: then that they be graceful and pleasing in doing it.”

However, when it comes to Ork architecture, I think Frank Zappas quote is more on point…

“Some scientists claim that hydrogen, because it is so plentiful, is the basic building block of the universe. I dispute that. I say there is more stupidity than hydrogen, and that is the basic building block of the universe.”

Some people plan their terrain builds, which makes sense. They draw out what they want or what they’re dreaming of but for me, and my Ork army, we say piss off to all that nonsense and just start slapping things together.

My only rule was to have no rules and just start glueing things together (there’s also so much bicarb soda in these builds you could scrape it off and make your own gluten free soda bread). There was none of that namby pamby dry fitting first just good old knocking bits together. I guess I incorporated the rule of cool too, as in, if it looks cool to me then keep it.

I wanted to lay out everything I’ve built because you see as well as having no plan I didn’t measure or calculate anything either I just simply built things. Now, as you can see in the layout below, I’ll need a couple more wall sections to complete the outer perimeter of New OrkLeans.

In case I haven’t explained it already, New OrkLeans is an Ork fort with a town within the relative safety of its confines. Much like a castle from medieval times.

Internal buildings I’ve completed so far are the Mek-Shop, the butchers, the bar (The Slaughtered Squig) and the air conditioning tower.

I’d still like to build, before Orktober, somewhere for the Mad Dok (Doctor) to chop off limbs and attach mechanical claws etc and maybe a privy (Bog).

There’s also some more detailing I’d like to do over everything.

Removable roof
Still need to add more corrugated cardboard here and there.
Air conditioning tower
As well as scratch building and kitbashing I also used a lot of 3D printed stuff like this little tin shack.
Not sure if you can see it but I used some chicken wire a client gave me to use as ladders.
Da Mek Shop

Some of you might remember a tower I built for my Pirate project well I recommissioned it to be an Ork tower. As well as adding details and little deck areas I also made the whole thing playable internally too by cutting it into three sections.

For the front gate there will be hinges so that the gates can be opened and closed. For the sign I was sort of going for an old billboard type look. Should work well once painted and all the lettering is attached.

As you can tell I’ve been having a ton of fun. There’s still a fair bit to build before Orktober but I’m out in the cabin each night tinkering away so I’m feeling optimistic. The plan is to build as much as I can so that in Orktober I paint like an Ork possessed! Wish me luck.

Now for something complete un-Ork-related but still fun.

My mate Big Waz and I host a podcast called Fly On The Wall Podcast (type it in to Spotify or iTunes all as one word if you’re keen to have a listen but be warned it’s very dark humoured). A friend of the show and a long term listener who we call The Professor has just released his E-Book and we want to do what we can to promote it for him.

For a very small price you can download it here – https://www.amazon.com.au/Vanguard-T-N-Goldsmith-ebook/dp/B0BCMRMLSZ/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?crid=WRDLMO9EA1UQ&keywords=vanguard+ebook&qid=1663973109&qu=eyJxc2MiOiItMC4wMSIsInFzYSI6IjAuMDAiLCJxc3AiOiIwLjAwIn0%3D&s=books&sprefix=vanguard+ebook%2Caps%2C484&sr=1-6

The more he sells and the more positive feedback he gets the more inclined he will be to write a sequel or something else. Give it a go. Fun fact, the cover art to the book was done by none other than Big Waz!

Cheers

IRO

  1. The city/Fort is progressing well Luke, and plenty of space to add more ! LOL like the sound of the Bad Doc’s surgery and of course you will need multiple privies for a town that big ! LOL Probaly need a Squig Pen too, as you wouldn’t just want them wandering about.
Great shout out for the professor, and Big Waz’s art looks awesome.

    1. Thanks mate. It kind of makes me chuckle at the thought of just one old disgusting loo that they all use haha. A Squig pen isn’t a bad idea. I might need to add one down the track as I’ve also got a few vehicles I want to get done before the Orktober paint-fest starts hehe

  2. Wow you have been busy, I’m busy for a week and you do all this! Looks great mate, when you do the “privvy” don’t forget the squares of newspaper so they can wipe!

Quick tip, if you paint the bits of corrugated card with PVA wood glue it hardens then up a but and makes them less prone to damage.

    Cheers Roger.

  3. Damn, that’s crazy! We can always count on IRO to go overboard! It’s cool that you actually have that many pieces to make something like this. The handiwork looks positively Orkish! Could probably be used for Necromunda as well!

  4. That is a fantastic fort- wonderfully ramshackle. So much detail on it too. I like the repurposed pirate tower. I would have the bog jutting out over the walls with a big dung heap beneath it….

I hope your friend’s book does well too.

    Cheers,

    Pete.

  5. You don’t do anything by half-measures, mate! The fort is incredibly ambitious and it will look stunning when you get it done. Its inspiring how you take on these big projects and its a reminder to me that I need to be braver and see what I can accomplish in the future too!

    1. Haha cheeky I thought it was per piece and this is modular sooooo… However the time to paint one Ork compared to one terrain piece is going to be in favour of the Ork. From what you told me you’ll be mostly focussing on single figures so I think you still might have an advantage orrrrr maybe it’s even-ish? What do you think though? Glad you like it my friend. Maybe one day your Clan can come and stay at new OrkLeans for a holiday

      1. Mate, I would love for my clan to come and hang out with yours someday (or vice versa natch, should you and your orks/family ever find themselves over here). And yes, that fort definitely counts as multiple buildings – I was just being cheeky – I’ll leave it up to you to work out how many buildings/sections it contains but give yourself bonus points for it looking awesome!
